The Flags

Picture
The green flag indicates that the race has started or restarted.  The Start Marshal decides when this flag should be deployed, although it is shown by all flag marshals around the track.

Picture
The Yellow flag or caution flag indicates either the commencement of a rolling lap or a hazard on track.  A static, or held yellow flag indicates to drivers that there is a stationary car up ahead and extra caution should be taken.  A waved yellow flag indicates a full track caution and race suspension.  This could be caused by a collision on track, a car in a dangerous position or debris.
All cars must slow down to a brisk walking pace in single file.  Passing is not permitted.

Picture
The red flag indicates that the race has been stopped.  All cars should come to a stop within a quarter of a lap and remain stationary until a race official tells them that they may move.  This flag may be deployed due to a driver in distress, a large accident, track repair.  It is also used to signify the end of the race, after the chequered flag has been deployed.

Picture
The chequered flag indicates that the full race distance has been completed by one of more drivers.  This flag is shown by the Start Marshal.  Cars must continue racing at full speed until the red flag is then displayed.

Picture
The union flag displayed by the Start Marshal, indicates half of the racing distance has been completed.

Picture
The black flag, shown by the Start Marshal, indicates that a car has been disqualified from the race and must retire to the infield immediately.

Picture
The white flag with a red cross signifies mechanical failure.  The driver must retire to the infield immediately as there is a safety issue with their car.  This flag is displayed by the Start Marshal.

Picture
The white board with a black cross, displayed by the Start Marshal, indicates that the driver has potentially committed an offence and may be penalised at the end of the race.

Picture
The white flag with a blue spot may be displayed by the Start Marshal to indicate slippery fluid on the track.
Racing may continue, but extra care should be taken.

Picture
The blue flag, displayed by the Start Marshal, indicates that a driver should hold their racing line, the inside line or outside line, to avoid unnecessarily holding up faster cars intending to pass.

LAP BOARDS: The Start Marshal will also display Lap Boards denoting the number of remaining laps in the race.
